Luxe Restaurant and Hotel Remodel

A high concept makeover of France's Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud by Jouin Manku and Sanjit Manku that takes your breath away.  Historic preservation restrictions prevented altering the structure inspiring creative design solutions that celebrate the stunning Romanesque and Gothic architecture.  The elegant juxtaposition of Modern and Medieval features streamlined, multipurpose furnishings and an organic palette which incorporates natural materials: wood, linen, wool, leather, and metal.

Galeto Brazilian Steakhouse Before and After

Galeto Brazilian Steakhouse Before and After

Cofounder of Espetus Churrascaria in San Francisco, Eli Nascimento had a great space and clear vision for Galeto Brazilian Steakhouse. Nascimento took over the former LCX Noodle Bar and Le Cheval space in downtown Oakland and serves a blend of Italian and Brazilian fare with galeto (young chicken in Portuguese) as their signature dish.

Designer, Kibwe Daisy, chose a chicken coop for inspiration using plain sawn white oak and steel accents in the millwork and interior architecture.  Pops of color adds Brazilian flair.  Take a look at the transformation by area below.

HOST STATION

The host area was concealed by a wall with a small opening.  At Galeto, the wall opening is expanded and begins the story of the metal and wood partnership throughout the restaurant.  Favorite feature: the Galeto logo sandblasted in 3/4" stainless steel.

THE BAR

The epitome of the chicken coop concept.  The client requested a focal bar and salad bar.  The design features a blend of Oak with structural steel channel details that glows.  Only partially realized here, the completed bar design will preserve the open feeling allowing transparency with the use of metal mesh from GKD fabrics.

CHEF'S TABLE

A ceiling hung wood pergola floats and defines the VIP seating area.  The pendants differentiate this space from other dining areas.

RESTROOMS

Not typically a highlight, but the restrooms at Galeto will be elegant featuring penny tile accent walls  in different colors for women and men and porcelain tile simulating vein cut travertine. (Men's room shown)

ROMAN AND WILLIAMS DRAWINGS

by STEPHEN ALESCH of ROMAN AND WILLIAMS

Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors is one of my favorite design firms.  A compelling story of Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, a married couple, who turned their talent for bringing elaborate movie settings to life into a design firm creating compelling real environments including hotels, offices, and private residences.  I spotted R&W in a publication on their design of the hipster-chic Ace Hotel and have been hooked ever since.  The drawings of their projects captivate and inspire me.  Stephen Alesch, an architect by trade, does all of the firm's presentation drawings. The first in this sequence is from their roots, the Practical Magic home that Robin imagined and designed from scratch and ends with renderings of the Viceroy Hotel, one of their latest projects.  Check out the R&W website for more.

MERCATO RESTAURANT

Location: Shanghai, China  Designed by Neri & Hu Design & Research Office

As described by the architect:

Situated within the prestigious Three on the Bund, Mercato is renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s newest culinary destination in Shanghai, the first of which to serve up an upscale yet rustic Italian fare. Neri & Hu’s design for the 1,000 square meter restaurant draws not only from the chef’s culinary vision but also from the rich historical context of its locale, harkening to early 1900s Shanghai, when the Bund was a bustling industrial hub.
